🐝 Beekeepers for the day. A visit to @bartersis 🐝 Beekeepers for the day. A visit to @bartersislandbees to learn how honey is made. Bees are fascinating! Did you know:

✔️A single honeybee will make about 1/12th of a teaspoon of honey in its lifetime. That is a LOT of work for a tiny bit of honey.
✔️ Bees make honey as their main food supply. Because of this, Denny only takes half of the honey the bees produce - the rest is given back to the hives for the bees to eat.
✔️Honey bees make honey, but they also carry pollen from flower to flower, pollinating plants so that fruit and vegetables (and other crops) can grow. Without honey bees, blueberries, strawberries, cranberries, apples, zucchini, pumpkins … (the list goes on!) would not be able to grow. That’s why it is important to protect the honey bees.

🐝You can help protect the bees by not using chemical pesticides in your yard and garden. You can also let parts of your yard or garden grow naturally. Weeds like dandelions are actually great bee food! Bees also love lavender, sunflowers, cosmos, clover, daisies, zinnias and goldenrod.

Barters Island Bees will be featured in our kids cookbook, coming out next summer! A big thanks to Donna and Denny for sharing their bees with us. ♥️

🍫A tasting @bixbychocolate. If you are in midco 🍫A tasting @bixbychocolate. If you are in midcoast Maine and haven’t been to Bixby Chocolate in Rockland for a tasting, I highly recommend a trip! I took L&L right before school started this year and they (and I) loved it. They offer tastings most days of the week; you can sign up for one on their website.

🍫A chocolatier will lead you through a curated selection of chocolates (we had a few different types of dark chocolate with beans sourced from Haiti and Belize, plus a bonbon and a salted caramel). You’ll learn all about the art of chocolate making plus learn about Bixby’s bean to bar process - they roast and process the cacao beans right in their warehouse, which is pretty incredible. We didn’t see the behind the scenes of the chocolates being made, but we did get to see the cacao bean roaster, a machine that crushes the bean and separates the shell from the cacao nibs, as well as a machine that grinds the nibs into cocoa liquor. Fascinating!

And a visit to their store and cafe (right where the tasting is) is worth the trip alone. We picked up lots of stocking stuffers for the holidays along with many treats for everyday … including chocolate sardines!!

☀️ Summer wrap-up. August was spent: on many a ☀️ Summer wrap-up. August was spent: on many adventures with L&L, at the beach (not nearly enough), on the boat and kayaks (not nearly enough), in the garden, in the kitchen (with Lex testing recipes) and on the computer (way too much, but par for the course when you have a manuscript due 9/1). And, as evidenced by the lack of pictures of Adrian, he spent August at work too. Boo.

This was the shortest summer I have memory of. But lots of sweetness in between the work. Now, to make the most of second summer. ☀️ 🍂

Maiori, on the Amalfi Coast was stunning (and terrifying) all at the same time. I don’t know how the Italians drive those roads everyday!! One wrong turn, and you’re down a cliff into the Med. 😵‍💫

🦪How do you like your oysters? It’s #National 🦪How do you like your oysters? It’s #NationalOysterDay, so let’s celebrate this small, but mighty bivalve. Oysters pack a powerful nutritional punch. As a registered dietitian and seafood lover, I always say these gems are nature’s multivitamin. Here are some highlights. Oysters:

- Provide an excellent source of zinc to support the immune system and wound healing
- Provide an excellent source of Vitamin B12 which supports nerve and blood cell health and plays a role in energy production, mood regulation and cognitive function
- Provide omega-3 fatty acids to reduce inflammation and support brain + heart health
- Provide an excellent source of iron, essential for transporting oxygen in your blood. Oysters are one of the richest sources of heme iron, the form readily absorbed by the body
- Are low in calories and rich in protein

Whether you slurp ‘em raw, roast ‘em, or toss ‘em on the grill, oysters are a delicious way to nourish your body.

**Note: children, those were are pregnant, older adults and those with weakened immune systems should not consumer raw oysters due to the risk of food borne illness.**
